The Castle in Oreoi

The Castle in Oreoi: the year of its construction hasn’t been verified yet. It is said that the hill is manmade and it took many years to be built. It was also difficult to get in; there were two secret underground passages, the one extending to the town of Istiaia and holding even a carriage in its tunnel. Residents’ testimonies claim that there is still a segment of this underground road under the houses in Istiaia. Concerning the second passage, it is believed that it was leading to the area “Kefales” in Asminio. Today, if you visit the Castle in Oreoi, you will see some remains of the external wall. However, it’s worth a visit to learn about its history and enjoy its view.

The Bull in Oreoi

The Bull in Oreoi: this marbled bull, which is 3,2 m long, constitutes a sample of the great cultural prosperity of the village during the Hellenistic Period. It was found in the shore in the 60s and it is presently exhibited in a protective glass case. It is said that the horns missing from its head were golden. It has been positioned in the park lying next to the esplanade, opposite to the port authority. This bulky sculpture is a landmark for Oreoi.

The Byzantine Temple of St Vasileios

The Byzantine Temple of St Vasileios: it appears to be built in the place of a previous idolatrous chancel. It lies under the castle in Oreoi.
